AWS Announces Elastic File Service (EFS) – How does it compare to Zadara NAS as a Service?

AWS Elastic File Service

Yesterday AWS announced a limited preview of an intriguing new product, the Elastic File Service (EFS), and we congratulate AWS on this important milestone.

AWS disclosed that EFS costs $0.30/GB/month and offers an NFS-only service to EC2 instances in a VPC. So how does Zadara NAS as a Service at AWS compare? Now is a good time to recap some of the features that Zadara offers with our File service:

  • Both NFS and CIFS (SMB) access with LDAP and Active Directory integration
  • Dedicated physical drives for total performance and security
  • Encryption of data at rest with customer-owned keys
  • Cross-region replication
  • Snapshots with lifecycle policies
  • Thin provisioned clones
  • Hybrid and multi-cloud:
    On-premises <–> AWS <–> Microsoft Azure replication
  • Choice of all-SSD, high performance shares or high capacity SATA drives
  • SSD caching of all NFS and SMB volumes
  • RAID level selection
  • Available in 6 AWS regions
  • Starting at $0.08/GB/month

EFS isn’t publicly available yet so we can’t do a detailed comparison but we will as soon as EFS becomes widely available.
