Zadara NAS in the Google Cloud Platform

Zadara Storage just added the Google Cloud Platform to the list of supported public cloud providers. This will allow you to connect Linux and Windows Google Cloud Engines (GCE’s) running inside the Google Cloud to Zadara’s enterprise storage located in our Ashburn, VA data centers.

Currently, there are several options that will allow self-managed NAS running on GCE’s, but they require staff to manage and time to configure. Most service providers and companies are moving away from that model and are adopting Storage as a Service (STaaS) to reduce complexity and management overhead.

Zadara’s Clouds are managed 24/7 by a dedicated team of DevOps engineers to make sure data is accessible within the highly available architecture.

Zadara NAS in the Google Cloud Platform: How it Works

With GCE and Zadara, storage can be provisioned in minutes and accessible from both Central US and Eastern US regions and zones using a common NAS. Just create a Zadara VPSA by selecting GCP as the Cloud Provider:

Zadara Provisioning Portal Now Supports GGP

Once custom networking is provisioned for you by our Operations team, you can manage your storage via an ssh tunnel into any of your Linux GCE’s using an external ephemeral or static IP. If you expose your Windows GCE using RDP, you can manage directly via remote desktop.

Management of your VPSA is very straightforward. However, it is important to understand that in GCP, the routes announced to Zadara’s Clouds are via the GCE external IP. For security reasons, you will need to specify the IP address with a /32 (the exact IP address) instead of giving a subnet range.

When creating a server record, use the exact IP address

In the example above, I was able to mount the “nfs1” share to both GCE’s running in US Central and US East. Having a common file share is extremely convenient when running in different regions. You should be able to mount anywhere within the GCP, but coast-to-coast latency probably would not work well for most applications.

If you would like to test Zadara with GCE, please contact me and I will get you started with a free 7-day trial to show you how easy and quick it is to setup a NAS configuration in the Google Cloud Platform.
